Drake Lindsey is heading to Big Ten Football Media Days, and if you watched even a handful of Gophers games last fall, you know exactly why. The redshirt freshman quarterback from Fayetteville, Arkansas, will represent Minnesota alongside linebacker Maverick Baranowski and defensive lineman Anthony Smith, the program announced.
Wearing No. 5, Lindsey didn't take long to make his mark once he got on the field. In late September, he completed 31 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns in a Big Ten win, a performance that earned him Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
That weekly award was a signal of things to come, and it's part of why Minnesota is putting Lindsey in front of the microphones at Big Ten Media Days rather than a veteran holdover. Programs typically send whoever they consider their most representative or most media-worthy pieces to the event, and for the Gophers right now, that's a quarterback who's barely played a full season and is already the face people associate with the offense.
Media Days appearances carry weight beyond the soundbites. It's the league's chance to put a name and a face to a program before fall camp opens, and Minnesota is choosing to make that face a first-year starter. Sharing the trip with Baranowski and Smith gives the Gophers representation on both sides of the ball, but Lindsey is the one whose stock has risen the fastest and the one national reporters will be most curious to hear from.
For Minnesota fans, the appearance is really just confirmation of what the box score already suggested last September: the Gophers found their quarterback, and he's not a senior on his way out the door. He's a redshirt freshman with, presumably, years of eligibility still in front of him. Whatever Lindsey says at the podium this summer, the bigger story is that Minnesota now has a young, proven arm to build the offense around heading into 2026.
