The Big Ten announced that wrestling's Andrew Sparks and women's hockey's Nelli Laitinen were named Minnesota's Outstanding Sportsmanship Award honorees, per Gopher Sports. The conference recognizes two student-athletes from each member school with the honor, given to those who distinguish themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior, fairness and respect toward opponents, and good citizenship both on and off the field of play. Recipients must also be in good academic standing.
Sparks closed out his sixth and final season in the Maroon and Gold by earning All-America honors for the first time in his career. After a loss in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championships, the No. 13 seed reeled off four straight wins to finish fifth at 165 pounds — the best finish by a Gopher at that weight since 2004 and the highest by a Gopher seeded 13th or higher since 2021. He's also the first Gopher to become an All-American at 165 pounds since 2014.
A Costa Mesa, Calif., native who also finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships, Sparks went 26-8 overall with an 11-3 dual mark and a 5-2 record in Big Ten duals this season. He tied for the team lead in matches wrestled (34) and wins (26), and tied for second on the roster in matches against ranked opponents (18). Sparks wraps his Minnesota career as the first Gopher to compete at five different NCAA Championships, finishing 94-46 overall with a 94-46 record and 23-13 conference mark — his 94 career wins tie for 51st in program history. Off the mat, he was named Academic All-Big Ten, a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and earned CSC Academic All-District recognition.

Laitinen, a two-time captain for the Gopher women's hockey team, wrapped her collegiate career with another standout season on the blue line. The Lohja, Finland, native earned CCM/AHCA Second Team All-America honors, was named to the All-WCHA Second Team and finished as a top-three finalist for WCHA Defender of the Year. She tied for fourth among WCHA defenders with a career-high 10 goals and ranked fourth among league blue liners with 30 points, highlighted by her first career hat trick and a career-high five points at Sacred Heart on Jan. 3 — a performance that earned her WCHA Defender of the Week honors.
Laitinen kept climbing the Minnesota record book along the way, moving into seventh all-time in program history in points by a defender on March 1 and tying for 10th all-time in goals by a defender on Jan. 9. She also skated in her second Winter Olympic Games for Team Finland in Milan, Italy, this season. Academically, Laitinen earned WCHA All-Academic and Scholar-Athlete recognition along with Academic All-Big Ten honors. Most recently, she was selected sixth overall by PWHL Hamilton in the PWHL Draft, becoming the first player the franchise has ever chosen.
