John Anderson, who spent 43 seasons building Gophers baseball into a Big Ten power, will receive the 2027 American Baseball Coaches Association/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award, given annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to baseball at the local, national and international level.
The award will be presented at the ABCA Hall of Fame Banquet on Friday, January 8, 2027, during the 83rd annual ABCA Convention in Chicago.
Anderson took over as the 13th head coach of Gophers baseball in the fall of 1981 at age 26, making him the youngest head baseball coach in Big Ten history at the time. He retired after the 2024 season with a career record of 1,390-1,021-3, which ranks 20th all-time in NCAA Division I coaching victories and stands as the most wins in University of Minnesota and Big Ten history.
Over his tenure, Anderson led the Gophers to 11 Big Ten regular season championships and 10 Big Ten Tournament titles, along with 19 NCAA postseason appearances. His 2018 team delivered one of the program's signature seasons, hosting an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2000 and advancing to the program's first NCAA Super Regional.
Anderson was named Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times and earned ABCA Mideast Region Coach of the Year honors in 2004, 2010 and 2018. He was inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame in 2008 and the University of Minnesota "M" Club Hall of Fame in 2002.
The Lefty Gomez Award adds another line to a resume that already runs deep, and it's a fitting nod to a coach who spent more than four decades shaping the program before handing it off in 2024.
