The 2026 season started the way you'd hope a home opener would. Minnesota hosted Eastern Illinois on September 3 at 7:00 PM, and by halftime the game was over.
The final was 59-7. The Gophers came in as 42.5-point favorites and still covered, leading 35-7 at the break inside Huntington Bank Stadium. Darius Taylor did most of the early damage with 3 first-half rushing touchdowns.
The story of the night was Javon Tracy. He took 2 punts back for touchdowns, from 87 and 69 yards, which set a program record. He also caught 5 passes for 98 yards, so he wasn't just a return man. "His vision is so good," P.J. Fleck said of Tracy.
Taylor finished with 56 yards on 14 carries and caught 3 passes for 31 yards. That pushed him to 100 career receptions, a nice number for a running back who's been part of this offense for a while now. Quarterback Drake Lindsey was efficient, completing 19 of 24 passes for 264 yards. His touchdown pass went to tight end Pierce Walsh. Once the game was decided, backups Max Shikenjanski and Xavier Ford each ran for a second-half touchdown.
The defense was just as dominant. Minnesota had 9 tackles for loss and held Eastern Illinois to 51 rushing yards on 28 attempts. Cal transfer T.J. Bush made his presence known right away with a sack on the Panthers' opening drive. Eastern Illinois's only points came on an 8-yard touchdown catch by Tyren Buggs. "Every position group showed up and played elite ball," linebacker Maverick Baranowski said.
You can only learn so much from an opener like this. It was a 6-touchdown spread, and the game was settled by halftime. Still, this was the clean night you want: special teams scored twice, the quarterback was efficient, and the front seven lived in the backfield. With the win, Minnesota moved to 1-0.
The next opponent was much tougher. Minnesota and SEC opponent Mississippi State met on Saturday, September 12, at 2:30 p.m. That game was a far better test of where this team stood.
