Five players with ties to Minnesota hockey spent the last week of July wearing the red, white and blue instead of maroon and gold. Sophomores LJ Mooney, Mason Moe and Jacob Rombach represented Team USA at the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase, running July 26 through Aug. 1, alongside incoming Gopher freshmen Wyatt Cullen and Jacob Kvasnicka, who will join the program this fall.
The showcase was held at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, and doubled as USA Hockey's National Junior Evaluation Camp, pitting the Americans against junior squads from Canada, Finland and Sweden. It's the first checkpoint on the road to the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship, with the U.S. looking to rebound after finishing fifth at this past winter's tournament following back-to-back gold medals.
Mooney and Moe skated up front for the Americans, the same role they hold with the Gophers, while Rombach manned the blue line. Mooney got on the board in a 5-2 loss to Sweden, opening the scoring just 5 minutes and 48 seconds into the first period. All three are part of a deep pool of NCAA-tied talent that head coach Adam Nightingale, on loan from Michigan State, brought into the 47-player camp.
The two incoming freshmen add to the pipeline. Cullen, the son of three-time Stanley Cup champion Matt Cullen, was Nashville's 10th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and led USA Hockey's U-18 team with 1.12 points per game last season. Kvasnicka, drafted by the New York Islanders, spent last season with Penticton of the WHL before making the jump to Minnesota. Rombach was also drafted by Nashville, and Moe by New Jersey — both will return to Dinkytown with fresh NHL pedigree and a taste of international competition before puck drop this fall.
