Zach Sanders is stepping down as a Gophers wrestling assistant coach to pursue a head coaching position at the prep school level, the program announced.
It's the end of a run that goes back well over a decade in Dinkytown. Sanders wrestled for Minnesota under Hall of Fame coach J Robinson and finished his college career in 2012, taking third at 125 pounds at the NCAA Championships that year to cap a senior season in which the Gophers finished second nationally. He went on to compete at the Olympic Trials in both 2012 and 2021.
Sanders moved into coaching almost immediately, joining the staff as an administrative assistant before taking over as Minnesota's volunteer assistant coach starting with the 2016-17 season. He wasn't officially elevated to a paid assistant coach role until the 2023-24 campaign, working the lighter weights on a volunteer basis before the title finally caught up with the job he'd already been doing.

His imprint on that part of the roster is hard to miss. Sanders specialized in technique work at 125, 133 and 141 pounds, and wrestlers he coached at those weights combined for 17 All-America honors and 36 NCAA Championships qualifications during his tenure, headlined by Ethan Lizak's runner-up finish in 2017 and Vance VomBaur's back-to-back All-America seasons in 2024 and 2025.
Sanders is a Wabasha-Kellogg product who won five state titles in high school under his father, Ron Sanders, himself a hall of fame coach. That family coaching background makes the move to run his own program somewhere else feel less like a career pivot and more like the next natural step for someone who's been building toward a head chair his whole life.
For a staff that's leaned on him to develop the lower weights for the better part of ten years, replacing that continuity will be the real work ahead of the coming season.
